Yesterday was Step-Mother's Day! Yesterday was Step-Mother's Day?? I've been a Step-Mom for 12 years now and I had NO IDEA! So I can only imagine just how many other Step-Mom's have NO IDEA, let alone our Hubby and kidsI I actually stumbled upon the revelation Saturday as I was catching up on some of my favorite step-family blogs. I'm one for celebrating any holiday centered around me, so how could I have missed this one!
Was it the lack of retailers with "Step-Mother's" specials - Let your Step-Mom know much you care with something special! Or that all my favorite restaurants weren't rolling out the red carpet with a decadent Step-Mother's brunch? I could go on and on, but when I read a "A day of my own! You won't be competing with the Mother!" I wanted to scream! That very distinction is the problem. The separate day feeds competition and says ever so subltly, we are not respected on the same level.
For me it could have been Mother's Day times two, but one day was just fine. I am a mother to all my kids and we celebrated last week. Having a day dedicated to me the "Step-Mom", a day I have to tell my Hubby and Kids that it actually exists - It's a real thing! Not something I made up for extra attention! It's kinda humilating. And why I never uttered a word to anyone in my family about it.
I don't want a Step-Mother's celebration. I enjoy the Mother's Day celebration with my Hubby and Kids, whether it's on the day centered around the Mom of two of my kids or the day before, two days after - I am a Mom a different kind of Mom, but a Mom all the same.
